  • RAT GENOMICS & MODELS
    December 6 - 9, 2007
    Abstract Deadline: October 5, 2007

You are cordially invited to participate in the fifth meeting on Rat Genomics & Models, which will be held at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. The meeting will begin with dinner and the first session on the evening of Thursday, December 6, and will conclude with lunch on Sunday, December 9, 2007. We are looking forward to a broad-based meeting, and abstracts are welcomed on all scientific topics related to rat genetics, genomics and physiology.

The format of the meeting will include six oral sessions consisting of invited and short talks, limited to approximately 15 minutes, principally on unpublished work. Oral presentations will be selected by the organizers from the submitted abstracts. The other submitted abstracts will be presented in poster session(s). As is usual at Cold Spring Harbor meetings, all abstracts of both poster and platform sessions will be published in an abstract book given to all the participants.

  • Announcing the New Cardiovascular Disease Portal

Cardiovascular Disease Portal at the Rat Genome Database
The new Cardiovascular Portal at RGD provides a comprehensive resource that integrates diverse data types and analysis tools. This dynamic portal offers researchers a unique opportunity to locate related cardiovascular disease information in one centralized location. The Cardiovascular Disease Portal homepage offers users a summary of data within the portal and several options to view and access data. The portal homepage invites users to customize a results page by allowing users narrow results by specific disease or disease category. Once a specific disease is chosen, the disease portal will provide a list of related genes, QTL, and strains along with a genomic view of these objects as well as access to related Genome Browser results. The portal also offers sections for Phenotypes, Biological Processes and Pathways related to cardiovascular disease. We invite you to visit the new Cardiovascular Disease Portal at RGD and take advantage of the excellent resource for cardiovascular disease information.

  • Neuroscience Data Portal at the Rat Genome Database
To better serve the needs of the neuroscience research community, the Rat Genome Database will release a Neuroscience Portal to provide researchers with easy access to data on genes, QTLs, strain models, biological processes and pathways related to neurological diseases. This resource, partially funded by NINDS will also include dynamic data analysis tools to make it a one stop resource for neuroscience researchers. Watch for it at end of October.

  • Rat Genome Database Grant Renewed
The Rat Genome Database (RGD) was granted a 4 year renewal of support from the National Institutes of Health for its services to the research community. RGD is the premier source of rat genetics and genomics data for the international research community as evidenced by the nearly 4.4 million website hits it in the first three quarters of 2005. Continued funding of this important resource ensures RGD will continue to develop data and tool components to meet the needs of its users. During the new grant cycle, RGD will focus on developing areas cited as priorities by its Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) and the rat research community. On the recommendation of the SAB, RGD has set a goal of annotating all rat genes within the next three years, and providing predicted gene tracks on GBrowse to offer a comprehensive rat gene catalogue. In its efforts to provide greater services to the large physiological and disease- based rat communities, RGD will continue to increase QTL and strain data, and provide a link between genetic and genomic data through its phenotype data initiative. Experimental data including environmental factor information and measured values will be added with priority on strains used in QTL studies. The Neurological Disease Portal, to be released in December 2005, will provide a platform for integration of diverse data types and analysis tools for both the naïve and power user to easily access data of interest in a single location. RGD will release a Cardiovascular Disease Portal in spring 2006 and continue development of sophisticated data mining and analysis tools for these and additional portals as part of its efforts to meet the needs of the disease oriented rat research communities.

  • Human and Molecular Genetics Center sponsors Microarray Workshop
Microarray has become a widely used tool in examining differential gene expression on a global scale. This workshop is designed to provide hands-on training in basic techniques used in microarray such as RNA isolation, labeling and hybridization for cDNA microarrays. An introduction to the Affymetrix GeneArray system will be presented as well.
