We
are developing transgenic rat models and whole genomic tools to
identify mutant genes and pathways responsible for human hypertension,
stroke, and metabolic diseases. We have the capacity to mutate a
single gene in the rat (transgenic rat) and to determine the consequences
of such gene manipulation on blood pressure, cardiac functions,
and metabolism. In addition we have developed transgenic rat rescue
approach using large DNA fragments (BACs, YACs). This approach relies
on replacement of a mutant version of the candidate gene responsible
for a disease with its wild-type copy.
We are studying behavioral effects of Neuropeptide Y in transgenic
rats, and developing a rat model system for preeclampsia to begin
mapping and transgenic studies.
