Complex
diseases such as hypertension and renal failure are determined by
the interaction of multiple genes with environmental factors. My
research interest is focused in the identification of the genetic
determinants of hypertension and renal disease in rat models of
hypertension. The main strategy is to identify chromosomal regions
containing the causative genes through linkage analysis in segregating
populations of rats. By the use of consomic strains of rats, we
are able to develop congenic strains for our region of interest
in only two generations of breeding. Once the region containing
the causative gene is small enough, we identify the candidate genes
by comparative mapping, DNA sequencing and gene expression.
