The
laboratory is pursuing three projects: Human leukocyte antigen Preimplantation
genetic diagnosis (HLA-PGD), and two deletion/duplication testing
projects.
HLA-PGD: This program seeks to help children in need of an HLA
matched transplant by enabling the affected child’s parents
to have an HLA matched sibling who could act as a cord blood donor
for the child in need of the transplant. We are developing a technique
to test human embryonic cells, and have started work with embryologists
at the Froedtert and Medical College Reproductive Medicine clinic
to develop a method to determine the HLA status of single human
cells for analysis.
The first deletion/duplication project is the development of a
test for detection of deletions and duplications that are found
in 2% to 5% of children with significant mental retardation. We
have developed this assay to test patient samples from Children’s
Hospital of Wisconsin. The protocol for this assay can be found
by clicking on the link below.
The second project is the development of a test for duplications
and deletions at loci thought to be critical to learning and memory,
which will be used to study children with neurodevelopmental disorders
of unknown origin.
