Medical Risks and Complication of Obesity (MRCOB)

 |
Principle Investigator:
Ahmed Kissebah, M.D., Ph.D.
The Goals:
Obesity is defined as being more than 20 percent above the average
weight for a person of a given height, and is a known risk factor
for chronic diseases including heart disease, diabetes, high blood
pressure, stroke, and some forms of cancer. The Medical Risks
and Complication of Obesity project was created with the overall
goal of identifying the genetic markers that associate with descent,
gender, allele and mutation in humans. Once identified and cloned,
the possibility exists that the genetic composition of obesity
can be determined and that remedies then are developed to help
people with certain types of obesity. The Bioinformatics Program is teamed with the
Division of Endocrinology, headed by Ahmed H. Kisseba, M.D., Ph.D.
and the TOPS national organization to create a Web-based environment
for the focused study & to determine the genes most responsible
for obesity.
Collaboration:
Department of Medicine (MCW)
TOPS
Research Resource:
2500 individuals in about 400 core families are genetyped.
