Human International
Gene Annotation Jamboree
Tokyo, Japan
August 26, 2002
A year long collaboration between members of the international human
genome research community culminated in a ten-day gene annotation "jamboree"
in Tokyo in August 25th - Sept 5th, 2002. This was the first large-scale
annotation activity conducted on the entire collection of human cDNA's.
In the spirit of the FANTOM project (URL), H-Invitational (also called
the "Odaiba Marathon", URL) included 118 members of the international
human genome research community. The largest U.S. contingent came from
the Bioinformatics Program, Medical College of Wisconsin.
Bioinformatics Program participants were Mary Shimoyama, Group Leader, Rat Genome Database,
Rajni Nigam, Gopal Gopinathrao and Susan Bromberg, Rat Genome Database
Curation staff, and Mike Thomas, a bioinformatics research scientist specializing
in molecular evolution, and Peter Tonellato, Ph.D., Director, Bioinformatics Program. Dr.
Tonellato, stated that, "This activity will help the Medical College in
several important ways: First, it provides a core of expert investigators
able to properly interpret gene models and annotations for the College's
basic and clinical scientists, Second, it prepares us for similar activities
in the rat, a major model of human disease used at MCW, and finally, it
creates a strong bond between the Bioinformatics Program members and this large group of
top notch international investigators. Such bonds lead to more resources,
interactions, and collaborations between the international scientific
community and the Medical College of Wisconsin." Plans for follow up results
and publications have been made that will include the Bioinformatics Program team.
